Many of the youth who attended our bible studies over the years have grown up, are married and have children. Yupik Eskimo's spend much time hunting and gathering food that God provides. During specific times, over the course of the year, as our foods migrate, we spend time planning, getting ready, waiting for the right weather, maintaining and fixing our equipment in order to get the food needed to feed our families. This is a snap shot in time, at this time of the year, when we fish for smelt and sometimes we catch a trout. We teach our children and grandchildren, where to go, how to dig a hole, how to make hooks, how to be safe and observant, about the weather and how to fish.
Yupik needs and values cause us to spend most of the time outdoors. To be a witness where they are, allows us at times what others call, church without walls. It's much more than fellowship, being able to listen, answer question, laugh together, pray together, share together and build relationships. Basically, it's seeking them out, (relational bridge building), and meeting them where they are. Winter ice fishing is one of the many outdoor activities that our Lord can use to be a witness for Him.
